Afghanistan, 20 Years Later

Updated: Sep 11, 2021

Given the situation in Afghanistan as the U.S. military transfers authority to the Afghan people, the rise of the Taliban, and many military members feeling adrift amongst the politics and news coverage, we wanted to put out a statement. Here are our thoughts.

Over the week we have watched images of desperation and fear as the government in Afghanistan deteriorated. For many service members, the callous acts of 9/11 and serving in Afghanistan have been a defining part of military service. We understand.

Many have lost friends and family members and/or brought physical or mental wounds home - outcomes that forever changes lives. The painful images and the lingering questions, combined with the realities and memories of war can leave many to feel a mix of emotions that are hard to navigate and process. Please know that you do not struggle alone.

To all our Airmen, Guardians, Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen, and Civilians who’ve been a part of or supported our efforts in Afghanistan over the last two decades - we encourage you all to continue to reach out and lean on one another as we process everything. Please give special consideration and remembrance for those that paid the ultimate sacrifice. Whereas we can’t change the chain of events that are unfolding in front of us, we can support one another so we don't push any hurt on our families, friends, and communities.

These words are my own and not those of the Army or the DoD, but as Executive Director of Military Mentors. My team and I know the bond and mutual understanding that mentors and mentees have with one another. Relationships matter. People matter. We urge those partnerships to connect now and check in with one another with as much love, care, and empathy as you can muster. As our nation heals, we believe leadership and mentorship can each be a universal salve, even for the deepest wounds. Let’s all realize the healing power we have as we begin to move forward.
